Narrator Sonny Archer is challenged to perform this gothic tale of love, inheritance, rape, and murder, set in the early 1900s. Unemployed Zeb Wyckham accepts his older cousin's invitation to visit Lackaday House in Dartmoor. When Zeb arrives, he's surprised by the presence of multiple relatives, along with his ex-lover Gideon Grey. They've all gathered to marry off the senior Wyckham's young ward, Jessamine, who will inherit his fortune. At the same time, someone is playing nasty pranks that scare Zeb, who turns to Gideon for comfort, setting off a series of torrid sex scenes.
