Add this title to the list of Dickens works that leap to life, thanks to a skillful narrator. After only a few minutes of listening, one may well forget that only Charlton Griffin performs this novel and not a full cast. As with many Dickens novels, this one blossoms into a flowering tree of characters, and Griffin so transforms his voice that each person is fully developed through his or her own unique sound. Another Dickens mainstay, a complex plot with multiple twists and turns, is at work here and lends itself well to the audiobook format, especially with Griffin at the microphone. This may be a lesser-known Dickens title, but this production makes it well worth a listen. L.B.F. 2013 Audies Winner © AudioFile 2013, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2013]
