After her father, Hugo’s, death, Joanna finds a returned letter addressed to an Italian woman among his things. Listeners follow her journey to Tuscany, narrated by Katy Sobey. There she hopes to discover what happened to him during WWII. In a parallel story, narrated by Jonathan Keeble, listeners hear Hugo’s experiences: After being shot down over Tuscany, he is saved by a young woman named Sophia whom he falls in love with. Although listeners know that Hugo survives, Sophia’s fate remains a mystery until the end. Both Sobey and Keeble provide a clear contrast between the expressive Italian characters and the reserved Brits.
