Those who are looking for a fictional radio program similar to Garrison Keillor's famed "Prairie Home Companion" should look no further than Indiana Public Radio's new program, THE ERNIE PYLE EXPERIMENT. Of particular interest is the second episode, "That Long Sad Wind," in which the sonic layers of prairie winds and prairie critters function as a kind of character, interjecting at crucial moments to produce a mood that is at once nostalgic and melancholy. Also a treat, of course, are the narrators, whose talent for lending intimacy to dialogue adds credibility to the Depression-era stories.
