Narrator John Lee takes the reins of a sprawling space opera filled with diverse characters and intense worldbuilding. In the near future, humanity spans the galaxy, thanks to a transportation technology that makes all others obsolete: jump gates. Multiple storylines involve a mysterious spaceship, an alien race, and "post-humans." Lee tackles every character with surprising variation, including accent, tone, inflection, and more. However, the narration struggles with increasing plot stagnation, as this is obviously a prelude to a much larger series. Lee complements the slow story well with a lively narration and subtle humor while adapting to each section's different mood. The result is a promising start to a new series featuring a narrator at the top of his game. J.M.M. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine [Published: NOVEMBER 2018]
